The Turkish Super Cup final between Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe in Saudi Arabia has been called off at the last minute after a clash between the clubs and the host country’s authorities.
Everything was ready for this match to be played at 18:45 at the Al-Awwal Stadium in Riyadh, but the teams refused to take the field at the last minute.
This is because the local authorities refused the request of the Turkish clubs to go to the field to prepare with a T-shirt with the photo of the “father” of modern Turkey Mustafa Kemal Ataturk printed on it.
Although there were negotiations for more than 40 minutes, the Turkish clubs considered this request offensive and refused to go on the field, although the stadium was full.
Ataturk launched a program of revolutionary social and political reforms to modernize Turkey, serving as its first president from 1923 until his death in 1938.
These reforms included the emancipation of women, the abolition of all Islamic institutions, and the introduction of Western legal codes, dress, the calendar and the alphabet, replacing the Arabic alphabet with a Latin one, measures that were seen as a departure from radical Islam by many Muslim countries.
