Jurgen Klopp was emotional during his farewell speech to Liverpool fans at Anfield on Sunday, where he ended his nine-year spell with a 2-0 win over Wolverhampton.
The end of the journey was as expected for someone so honored at this great club. How could there be no tears for a man who traded on emotions and transformed Liverpool, bringing first hope and then glory during his nearly nine-year tenure.
In the last 10 minutes of the match, the fans increased the decibels and the love, so much so that Klopp could not hold back the tears. The TV cameras turned to his wife, Ulla, who was also crying in the stands.
When Klopp arrived at Anfield in October 2015 – he said you have to believe, and after a while, he managed to win a Premier League title, Champions League, FA Cup, two EFL Cups and a few more – but his impact in the club cannot be measured only by the trophies won.
“I’m completely surprised, I thought I was already broken to be honest, but I’m not. I’m very happy, I can’t believe it.”
“I am very happy for all of you, for the atmosphere, for the game, for being part of this family, for us, how we celebrated this day. It’s just incredible. Thank you very much.”
“It doesn’t seem like an end, it’s just like the beginning, because today I saw a football team playing full of talent, full of youth, full of creativity, full of desire. That’s part of development, that’s what you need, obviously.”
“But obviously for the past few weeks I’ve been getting absolutely a lot of attention. But with this time I understood many things. People told me I turned them from doubters to believers. This is not true. Believing is an active action: you have to do it yourself. I just said it should. You did it. This is a big change.”
“And no one is telling you now to stop believing. Because this club is in a better moment than ever?”.
“We have this great stadium, we have this great training facility. We have you – the superpower of world football. Wow”.
“I am one of you now. I love you so much”, said Klopp, mentioning at the end the saying: “I will never walk alone again”.
