After a very hot autumn with Manchester United, Cristiano Ronaldo has become a football player of Al-Nassr. In fact, there was also the option of the Portuguese staying in Europe, rather than embarking on his lucrative self-exile in Saudi Arabia.

Both in the summer and when he was released by the Red Devils, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner was offered to various teams from the Old Continent, especially those playing in the Champions League.

Everyone said no, including Borussia Dortmund. And to explain why Cristiano Ronaldo was not even close to wearing the yellow shirt, the general manager of Borussia, Carsten Cramer, thought.

Speaking on Kicker’s podcast, the manager laid out the reasons why the German club never intended to use the services of the Portuguese: “The value of Borussia Dortmund does not depend on the number of followers we have on social networks.

We are a football club, that’s the most important thing. We can also have the best marketing ideas in the world, but if we lose 3-0 at home against Freiburg, they are still of no use to us.”

On social media, there really is no comparison: Cristiano navigates 800 million followers between Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, while Borussia reaches a maximum of 40 million followers.

But the important thing for the manager of the yellows is the real fans, those who come to the stadium, rather than those who actually follow the Portuguese player: “It is a blessing for us that we have fans. We sell 500,000 shirts a year thanks to them, who all become ambassadors for Borussia Dortmund.”

In short, the reason why the yellows said “no” to CR7 is not so much a question of the field or economic balance, as has happened in other cases (see Bayern Munich), but because in the club’s idea the added marketing value of the Portuguese simply does not fits

And considering that Borussia is first in the Bundesliga, on the same level as Bayern Munich and Union Berlin, it turns out that even on the field there was not much need for CR7.
