Antivirus company Kaspersky has warned of new ShrinkLocker ransomware, which exploits flaws in the Bitlocker security system.

The virus can be activated once the user installs the version of Windows, which also installs the infected Bitlocker.

“The attackers created a virus in VBScript, a programming language used to automate tasks on Windows computers. This program checks which version is installed on the device and activates the Bitlocker feature accordingly,” the statement said.

The malware blocks access to user information on the device, then demands a ransom to unlock the data, with the message “there are no Bitlocker recovery options on your computer”

The virus can penetrate both newer and older versions of Windows, and Kaspersky suggests logging and monitoring network traffic as a preventative measure.
