At Apple, they were “shocked” by what Messi has done
Apple senior vice president Eddy Cue has expressed his shock at the impact Lionel Messi has made on Major League Soccer team Inter Miami.
The 36-year-old superstar decided to sign a two-and-a-half-year deal with the Herons after leaving Paris Saint-Germain at the end of his contract last July.
He helped his side lift the 2023 League Cup, scoring 11 goals and registering five assists in 14 overall appearances last year.
Cue highlighted the Argentine’s influence, commenting on the growth of MLS in recent months: “I’m excited that there are teams that are definitely pushing hard. Obviously what Inter Miami has done is an example of that and I think there should be more teams doing that and I think there will be.
“At least I’ve seen it enough, now that there’s a level of excitement… when someone asks me what I want from someone, any of the teams, I want to sign some more players!”
Claiming that Messi has had a positive impact on Apple TV subscriptions for MLS since arriving on a free transfer last year, Cue continued: “I was shocked. I had no idea because I knew it would make a difference, but I thought it would take time.”
“He just revolutionized it very quickly in a global perspective and a US perspective. So no, I didn’t appreciate the power and impact it had… it’s amazing to see this come to fruition,” Cue further added.
In 2022, Apple reached an agreement with MLS for their exclusive broadcasting rights. They are contractually obligated to provide broadcast of all league games on a global scale until 2032 for at least $250 million per season.
