This was the year of “Barbie” with the iconic character who knows no bounds in the race to conquer the world.
Director Greta Gerwig’s film has surpassed “The Dark Knight” as the highest-grossing film ever for Warner Bros. in the United States. The fantasy film about the famous doll, starring Margot Robbie, has grossed more than $537 million in the United States, less than a month after it opened in theaters on July 21.
The Academy Award-winning film The Dark Knight, which opened on the same weekend in July 2008, took in $536 million from US theaters.
But, this is not the only record that has been broken by “Barbie”. The film has surpassed the success of “Captain Marvel” of 2019. “Barbie”, which also stars actor Ryan Gosling, has earned more than 1 billion dollars from ticket sales worldwide, breaking all the records of films that were made by women directors. Although some conservatives, including Senator Ted Cruz and commentator Ben Shapiro, have criticized what they called the film’s discriminatory message, that has not stopped its long-term success.
Margot Robbie, who also produced the film, is expected to earn about $50 million from the film, thanks to ticket sales and additional benefits from the company that distributes it.
