The movement of revolt against artificial intelligence has intensified. After Hollywood, it’s the music industry’s turn to collectively voice its displeasure.

More than 250 artists signed an open letter on Tuesday to tech companies, developers and streaming platforms against generative artificial intelligence that uses their work without permission to train models that compete with them.

Among the signatories are Billie Eilish, Nicki Minaj, Elvis Costello, REM, Mumford & Sons, Katy Perry, Norah Jones, Nicki Minaj, Ja Rule, Jason Isbell and even Pearl Jam.

Almost all genres of music are represented. They are all members of the Artist Rights Alliance, an organization that protects the rights of artists “in the digital age”. They understand that Artificial Intelligence, when used intelligently, can foster creativity. But according to them: Unfortunately, some of the biggest and most powerful companies are using our work to train AI models without permission. These efforts are directly aimed at replacing the work of human artists with massive amounts of AI-generated “sounds” and “images,” which substantially reduce the royalties paid to artists. For many musicians, artists and composers this would be disastrous.
