Smith was not present at the ceremony to accept his award in person.
Set in 19th century Louisiana, Smith portrays a runaway slave who embarks on a treacherous journey to Baton Rouge while thwarting off violent plantation owners. “Emancipation” was inspired by an 1863 photograph known as “Whipped Peter,” which depicts a once-enslaved individual with severe lacerations on his back. The image’s circulation placed the brutality of slavery in front of the eyes of the American public.
After initially delaying “Emancipation” following Smith’s incident at the Oscars, Apple TV+ pivoted to positioning the historical drama as an awards season contender, releasing the film in October. Smith, who doubled as a producer on the film, is set to accept a Beacon Award from the African-American Film Critics Association alongside director Antoine Fuqua on March 1 for their work on the film. The film also scored nominations in two categories at the Black Reel Awards.
Smith’s win comes almost a year after the contentious 2022 Oscars, where the actor slapped Rock after an ill-received joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Moments later, Smith went on to win the Oscar for best actor for his performance in “King Richard.” As a result of the altercation, Smith was banned from all Academy-sponsored events for the next decade.
Daniel Kaluuya (“Nope”), Jonathan Majors (“Devotion”), Joshua Boone (“A Jazzman’s Blues”) and Sterling K. Brown (“Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul”) were also contending in the actor in a motion picture category at the NAACP Image Awards.

Osea Island is a 380-hectare island in the Blackwater estuary and has welcomed A-listers including Rihanna, Stormzy and Jude Law over the years. The island is only 45 miles from central London, but is only accessible twice a day for four hours at a time via an ancient causeway.
Often referred to as ‘English Necker Island’, it was owned by an eccentric aristocratic couple at the turn of the century but was bought by Nigel Frieda in 2004. Nigel, who has produced music for the Rolling Stones and started the Sugababes, originally deeded the land to a psychiatric nurse named Brendan Quinn to use as a rehabilitation clinic. But the clinic, which was frequented by the late Amy Winehouse, was closed by the Care Quality Commission in 2010.
Since then, the owner has quietly turned the island into both a rural retreat and a party spot, with worthwhile activities such as cycling, croquet and berry picking. Celebrities including Poppy Delevigne, Sienna Miller and Jaime Winston have all been spotted partying on the island, while films including The Woman in Black, starring Daniel Radcliffe and The Third Day, starring Jude Law, have all been filmed there.
Many famous singers and bands have also visited Osean for work, with two state-of-the-art recording studios on the island. Rihanna, Georga Ezra and The Weeknd have all used the studios, while Stormzy recently stayed on the island to record his latest album. He said during a radio interview:
Once you’re on the island, you’re basically stuck there, and we did a lot of the album there. It was a very surreal, spiritual experience when people talk about their spiritual experiences, it’s like far from fairy tales, but for everyone who was there, we prayed together, we would play football together, we would laugh, we would talk . And these were some of the best musicians in the world, and they are some of the best producers in the world and some of the best artists in the world.
While the island is private, you can stay there if you book an island stay with rooms from £300 a night. There are a number of houses across the island for different group sizes, but the largest is the Manor House which sleeps 20 and the Captain’s House which sleeps 16. There are also several smaller properties that form a sleepy village in the center of the island such as one bedroom confectionary and four bedroom penthouse.

They also won multiple Oscars, with 2004’s The Return of the King winning best film and best director for Peter Jackson.
The news was announced by Warner Bros chief executive David Zaslav.
Fans of the film franchise enjoyed more Lord of the Rings content in 2022, when the TV series The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power aired on Amazon.
It cost an estimated £800m to make and follows life in Middle Earth thousands of years before the books and films are set.
Work on the second series began in October last year.
Swedish gaming company Embracer Group bought the adaptive rights to author JRR Tolkien’s work last year – including Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
It means that should any film, game or merchandise deal be struck, they will gain revenue from it and have to be included in the development process.
In a statement to Variety, Peter Jackson and his collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens said Embracer and Warner Bros had “kept us in the loop every step of the way” about potential new films, adding:
“We look forward to speaking with them further to hear their vision for the franchise moving forward.”
Lee Guinchard, who runs Embracer, said the company were “thrilled” to be working with Warner Bros and also New Line Cinema, who produced the previous three Lord of the Rings films.
Guinchard said in a statement that the company would be “bringing the incomparable world of JRR Tolkien back to the big screen in new and exciting ways”.
It is expected that the new films will cover content from books, rather than re-visiting the previously released films.

This comes as the cost of living rises and Netflix faces increased competition from rival services.
“Members have never had more choice when it comes to entertainment,” a company spokesperson told the BBC.
Countries where subscription fees have been reduced include Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Croatia, Venezuela, Kenya and Iran. The company did not mention the UK or the US as countries where it had cut its prices.
The cuts apply to certain price plans, with subscription fees halving in some cases.
“We are always exploring ways to improve our members’ experience. We can confirm that we are updating the prices of our plans in certain countries,” said a Netflix spokesperson.
The firm’s shares closed 3.4% lower in New York on Thursday.
Netflix, which operates in more than 190 countries, has faced increased competition from streaming rivals including Amazon, HBO and Disney.
Last year, the firm cut hundreds of jobs and launched a less expensive ad-supported streaming option as it struggled to increase its share of the increasingly competitive streaming market.
The company is also cracking down on people who share their subscriptions.
Netflix introduced restrictions on sharing passwords in more countries earlier this month. These require customers to pay an additional fee if they want friends and family who do not live with them to share their subscription.
Last summer, Netflix revealed it had lost almost a million subscribers between April and the end of June as more people decided to leave the service.
However, in January the company said that subscriber numbers had increased by the end of 2022.
