BusinessUS technology company Google has made an official announcement that shows a change in its attitude towards remote working, joining a growing list of big tech companies returning to collaborative working policies.
Google’s Chief Human Resources Officer, Fiona Cicconi, outlined the new directive in an internal memo obtained by the media this week, emphasizing the importance of an office presence in fostering connection within the Google community.
Going forward, telecommuting requests will only be considered in exceptional circumstances, where non-remote employees are expected to spend three days per week in the office, monitored through badge swipes that may affect performance reviews.
The decision by big tech companies, which own the resources and tools to facilitate effective remote work, signals a departure from the widespread adoption of remote work policies seen during the pandemic.
These companies, which were at the forefront of enabling remote work globally, now seem to have changed their faith in its efficacy.
The change is in line with other major tech firms that have recently implemented stricter policies, effectively reversing their previous support for remote work.
Tech companies were once pioneers in offering flexible work arrangements, using enticing office perks to attract top talent.
However, when the pandemic hit the US, those same companies quickly switched to remote work. They became active recruiters of remote workers until last year, when industry leaders like Apple, Amazon, and Meta began scaling back their remote work policies.

Breaking News What's HotHistory buffs say they think they have found the secret location of the “Amber Room”, after discovering a railway and wagons in a former Nazi bunker in Poland, according to foreign media.
The Historical and Research Association “Jaćwież” came across the surprising discovery during the excavation in the “Mamerki” bunker complex in northern Poland. The narrow gauge railway tracks were discovered 5 meters below the surface, in an area that had recently been cleared of trees.
The complex was the headquarters of the Supreme Command of Hitler’s German Army and is located just a few kilometers from the “Wolf’s Den” bunker.
Although it was known that a railway line ran from Mamerki to the “Wolf’s Lair”, there was no official document showing that it lay within the complex itself.
“This is a big surprise as we didn’t know there was a railway inside the complex. Could it be the golden train with the amber room? We will find out soon”, said Bartlomiej Plebańczyk from the Mamerki museum.
The chamber created for Tsar Peter the Great in the 18th century, consisting of exactly 6 tons of elaborately carved amber and gold decorations, was dismantled by the Nazi forces that had occupied the country and transported to Koninsberg, which is now the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, where it was publicly exhibited.
But, immediately after the end of the war, the elements of the room disappeared almost completely, although some fragments were found in Germany during the 90s. A copy of the “Amber Room” was created in St. Petersburg in 2003, after several decades of work.
For decades, “treasure hunters” have searched Europe for lost riches, but to no avail.

SportsWhen there are a few hours left before the big final of Istanbul, Inter-Manchester City, the two coaches are making the final calculations to choose the 11 starters they will throw on the field.
The English team, which is looking for the first trophy in the history of the Champions League, does not have any concerns regarding the organic of the team. Ederson will return in goal, while the rest of the squad will most likely be the same as the one that beat Manchester United in the FA Cup final. Of course, the attention is on Erling Haaland who, in addition to the trophy, has the chance to deepen his records even more.
Meanwhile, in the black and white camp, there are two players in doubt, Mkitaryan and Korrea, whom coach Inzaghi will trust until the end. Most likely, the attack will consist of a former player like Edin Dzeko, who is on the edge with Lukaku, while the world champion with Argentina, Lautaro Martinez, plays on his side. There is also a runoff in the midfield where the dilemma is Brozovic or Mkhytarian, only if the Armenian manages to be ready for the Italian coach. The 34-year-old returned to the last session that the group did in Milan and his condition will be monitored in the following hours.
Spectacle is guaranteed. Two teams that have passed many great teams to reach the Istanbul final and are now only 90 minutes away from the biggest success, the Champions League trophy. The match will be played this Saturday starting at 21:00.

Technologyhe Mac Studio just got its first update, and it’s a screamer.
The desktop machine now comes with Apple’s new M2 Ultra chip — the “most powerful chip ever created for a personal computer,” according to Apple.
The new chip, based on Apple silicon, triples the performance of the previous M1 machine.
The new machine is a welcome update to the Mac Studio, which Apple first introduced in March 2022 as a modular, expandable computer for “studio” professionals. Although not as upgradeable as some customers might like, the machine has generally been very well-received. Reviewers praised its power, speed, quiet operation, and good connectivity options. There have been some complaints of noise issues, but it’s a popular choice for a lot of setups.
The new Mac Studio retains the previous design, but now comes with M2 Max or M2 Ultra chips. The M2 Ultra effectively doubles the M2 Max chip, and the new machine is up to three-times faster than the older M1-based Mac Studio.
Apple touted the new machine’s “incredible” performance and connectivity. Based on the M2 Ultra chip, the new machine runs rings around its predecessors.
The new chip features a 24-core CPU; a 76-core GPU; and a 32-core neural engine. It can support and a whopping 192-Gbytes of unified memory.
“It’s the most powerful chip ever created for a personal computer,” said Apple’s Jennifer Munn, Director, Engineering Program Management, referring to the new M2 Ultra chip.
“It is a monster of a chip,” said added.
The new Mac Studio now features a higher-bandwidth HDMI port that can run an 8K display at 240Hz. On the back are four Thunderbolt 4 ports, a 10 Gigabit Ethernet port, HDMI, and two USB-A ports. On the front, it has two USB-C ports and an SD card slot.
The M2 Max Mac Studio starts at $1,999 ($1,799 for education), the same pricing as its predecessor. The M2 Ultra Mac Studio starts at $3,999. Both versions are available to order today from Apple’s website. They will be available in Apple’s retail store and authorized resellers next week, beginning Tuesday, June 13.

SportsNikola Jokic and Jamal Murray starred as the Denver Nuggets beat the Miami Heat 109-94 to take a 2-1 lead in the NBA Finals.
Jokic scored 32 points, becoming the first player to record 30 points, 20 rebounds and 10 assists in the Finals.
Murray finished with 34 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists to complete his own triple-double in the final seconds.
The best-of-seven series resumes at the same venue, Kaseya Center in Miami, on Friday (01:30 BST Saturday).
Jokic and Murray are the first team-mates to post triple-doubles in the same Finals game, and the first to post 30-point triple-doubles in the same game at any stage of the season.
Nuggets coach Michael Malone described it as “by far their greatest performance as a duo in their seven years together”.
“Nothing he does surprises me, ever,” Malone said of Jokic. “The guy has shown over and over again that he’s built for these moments.
“Jamal is a guy that thrives, lives and excels in the moment – never afraid of it. And you can’t say that for a lot of players.”
Jimmy Butler scored 28 points and Bam Adebayo claimed 22 points and 17 rebounds for the Heat, who at one stage trailed by 21 in front of a crowd containing five-time NBA champion Magic Johnson, footballers Neymar and Paul Pogba and singer Shakira.
The Nuggets – beaten 111-108 in Denver on Sunday – have never won the NBA Championship, while the Heat are hoping to become the first eighth seeds to triumph.

SportsBarcelona has reacted after Leo Messi’s decision to move to MLS.
Leo Messi took part in a joint interview in Paris with ‘Mundo Deportivo’ and ‘Sport’, in which he revealed his decision.
In the interview, Leo talks about how he lived in Paris, about his departure in 2021, which he describes as very difficult and very ugly, and explains the reasons for not returning to Barcelona.
Among them, that he does not want to be responsible for player sales or salary cuts and his desire to enjoy football outside the pressure that exists in Europe. He also states that he would like to return to Barça, I don’t know in what position.
“I really wanted to return to Barça, I had that dream. But after what happened two years ago, I didn’t want to be in the same situation again, leaving the future in someone else’s hands…”.
“I wanted to make my decision, thinking about me and my family”, were Messi’s words.
After the Argentinian’s decision, the club of his life, Barcelona, also reacted.
They have expressed that they respect Messi’s decision regarding his future.
“On Monday the 5th, Jorge Messi, the father and representative of the footballer, conveyed to the president of the club, Joan Laporta, the decision of the player to sign with Inter Miami, despite the fact that there was a proposal presented by Barcelona in response to the expressed will from both FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi to return to wear the bleu-gran.
President Laporta understood and respected the decision taken by Messi to seek to compete in a championship with fewer demands and away from the focus and pressure he has been subjected to in recent years.
Joan Laporta and Jorge Messi also agreed to work together to promote a great tribute from Barcelona fans to a footballer who has been, is and will always be loved by Barcelon,” the Catalans’ statement read.

LifeStyleScientists have discovered evidence of members of a mysterious species that buried the dead and carved symbols in caves long before modern humans did.
The brains belonging to individuals of this extinct species, known as Homo naledi, were 1/3 the size of modern humans.
The discoveries could change our understanding of the development of the human species, because until now, this type of behavior was only associated with Homo sapiens and Neanderthals. The discoveries are detailed in 3 studies that will be published in the “eLife” magazine.
Fossils belonging to Homo naledi were first discovered in a group of cubs in South Africa in 2013, where fossils of other species have also been found before.
In addition to fossils, wall drawings were also found in these caves, which are estimated to be 241-335 thousand years old. Similar drawings were made by Homo sapiens and Neanderthals 80 and 60 thousand years ago.
“We discovered that they performed ancient burial rituals, used symbols and performed activities for this day. Although with smaller brains than humans, these species performed complex activities related to honoring the dead,” said paleoanthropologist and “National Geographic” explorer, Dr. Lee Berger. “This shows that these practices, which are still used today in the modern world, may not have been invented by humans.”
Berger explained that Homo naledi has some similarities to humans, such as walking upright on two legs and changing the shape of objects with its hands, but it had a smaller head, shorter stature and, despite being leaner, had a more muscular build. strong.
Fossils of babies of this species were also found in these caves and scientists think that the place was used as a cemetery. Researchers will continue to work on these discoveries, to understand how long an individual of this species lived, how close to Homo sapiens he lived and if any DNA samples can be identified and analyzed.

SportsA final worthy of glory. A trophy that also serves for participation in the European Cups during the next season. The challenge between Fiorentina and West Ham in the Conference League has a lot in common.
Both teams last won the UEFA tournament trophy in the 1960s. Also, both Fiorentina and West Ham finished the championship outside the European zone, and triumph in the final in Prague is the only way to be in the international arena.
Vincenzo Italiano, coach of Fiorentina, said: “West Ham has talent and quality. They are physically strong and know how to play hard when necessary. They always try to recover the ball and launch counterattacks. We must be careful. In such challenges, the details make the difference. Any mistake can decide the match. Two finals in one season is a great achievement, but now we want to win the trophy”.
While David Moyes, coach of West Ham, says: “Fiorentina surprised me for good. They will play the second final of the Cup and this shows a lot about the work they have done. They are a complicated opponent, Italian teams are always difficult. We have a lot of respect, but we want to take home the cup”.
Fiorentina has written history, as they are the first Italian team to reach the quarter finals of UEFA. But, after losing the final of the Cup with Inter, the violets will aim to triumph in the Conference League to improve the European progress, where they have won only one of the four challenges for the trophy.

TechnologyTikTok’s owner ByteDance has been accused of allowing Chinese Communist Party (CCP) members to access the data of Hong Kong civil rights activists and protesters.
Users who uploaded “protest-related content” were also identified and monitored, former ByteDance executive Yintao Yu alleges in a US court filing.
The CCP members were also able to access US TikTok user data, Mr Yu says.
A ByteDance spokesperson denied the claims, describing them as “baseless”.
The allegations are contained in a San Francisco Superior Court filing made this week as part of a lawsuit brought by Mr Yu.
In the filing, Mr Yu claimed that members of a CCP committee had access to a “superuser” credential, which was also known as “god user”, which allowed them to view all data collected by ByteDance.
He also alleged that the committee members were not ByteDance employees but were physically present at the company’s offices in Beijing.
This was common knowledge among senior executives, said Mr Yu, who for around a year from August 2017 was a head of engineering in the US for ByteDance.
The filing also alleged that in 2018 the CCP committee members used their “god credential” to “identify and locate the Hong Kong protesters, civil rights activists, and supporters of the protests”.
Hong Kong saw huge protests in 2014 – the so-called Umbrella movement – where people demanded the right to elect their own leader. After that, there were smaller demonstrations by civil rights activists. Much of this visible dissent has disappeared since Beijing cracked down with a draconian national security law after the anti-government 2019 protests.
When contacted by the BBC, a ByteDance spokesperson strongly denied the allegations: “We plan to vigorously oppose what we believe are baseless claims and allegations in this complaint.”
They also said that Mr Yu was employed by the company for less than a year and in that time worked worked on a now-discontinued app called Flipagram.
“It’s curious that Mr Yu has never raised these allegations in the five years since his employment for Flipagram was terminated in July 2018. His actions are clearly intended to garner media attention,” the ByteDance spokesperson added.
Mr Yu’s claims come as TikTok is under intense scrutiny around the world.
Mr Chew was quizzed by both Democrats and Republicans over the app’s data security and privacy practices, and its alleged ties to Beijing.
A spokesperson for TikTok said afterwards that the politicians were “grandstanding”.
In May, Montana became the first US state to pass a sweeping ban on the Chinese-owned video-sharing platform.
The ban is due to take effect in January 2024. It will make it illegal for app stores to offer TikTok, but does not ban people who already have TikTok from using it.
TikTok has sued to block Montana from imposing the ban, saying it conflicts with US free speech rights. Montana, which has a population of just over one million, banned the app on government devices last December.
TikTok says it has 150 million American users. Although the app’s user base has expanded in recent years, it is still most popular with teenagers and users in their 20s.
