I don’t get it, but it is not my money.
Speaking as one whose family relied on government commodity food back in the day for our survival, I take issue with right-wing Republicans who insist on maintaining their “I’ve got mine — you get your own” mentality.
For these Republicans, solving the deficit problem is more about supposedly saving money than helping to lift the poor out of desperation. Not everyone has bootstraps to pull themselves up with.
Those of us who have suffered the pain, anguish and frustration of poverty cannot relate to those who insist they can solve the problem even though many have never experienced even one day of hunger themselves.
To my mind, literally taking food from the mouths of the needy by kicking them off the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program as a means of political control is disgusting.
The Star’s editorial board said that Kansas Sen. Jerry Moran’s silence regarding Donald Trump’s criminal indictment in the Mar-a-Lago documents case is courageous in this iteration of the Republican Party. (June 14, 8A, “In today’s GOP, Moran’s silence passes for bravery”) But speaking up would be even better.
Let me remind you, The Star endorsed Moran in his 2022 reelection bid, and his behavior was identical then to what it is now. He has always been a compliant, quiet, keep-your-head-down senator. He does two things: the farm bill and support for veterans, and he makes sure to publicize his efforts. His supporters make sure to thank him in the paper. But he doesn’t speak up about controversial things. He never has.

TechnologySecurity experts have issued a warning to Android phone users, as a virus that steals banking data is circulating on the operating system.
According to the experts of “ThreatFabric”, it is about the virus called “Anatsa” that can infect Android mobile phones through applications from the Google Play Store.
This virus steals banking data that users may have on their mobile phones. The warning comes especially for the USA, England, Germany, Austria and Switzerland, as this virus has recently been circulating in these countries.
Once the “Anatsa” virus infects the device, the hacker is able to steal credentials and access the user’s bank account.
“Anatsa” is not a new virus. It has been in circulation since 2020, but recently it has become massive because it infects phones through the Play Store platform.
It has been noticed that this virus has infected over 30 thousand devices.
The “Anatsa” virus is hidden in some recently released apps on the Play Store that pose as PDF readers.
Google has announced that currently all applications infected with this virus have been removed from the Play Store, but the risk exists for those users who have already downloaded these applications.

SportsMax Verstappen took a dominant win in the sprint race at the Austrian Grand Prix after a first-lap squabble with team-mate Sergio Perez.
In wet conditions, Perez took the lead from Verstappen at the first corner and then edged the world champion onto the grass after the corner.
But Verstappen made a pass stick out of Turn Four and proceeded to motor away to another win.
Perez led Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz home in second place.
There were frantic battles down the field in a race that started on a wet track and proceeded to dry throughout.
Verstappen expressed his annoyance with Perez to the team after the race, saying his move out of Turn One was “really not OK” and they “had to have a chat about it”.
After doing so, Verstappen said: “When the moment happens, you don’t know why. But after the race we talked about it and it’s all good.”
He added: “We don’t have to make this a big story. It happened, we talked about it. You don’t have to write a whole article about it. Or maybe you can, for the clicks.”
Perez said he did not know Verstappen was partly alongside him, and that he moved to give him more room once he did.
Lance Stroll led home Aston Martin team-mate Fernando Alonso for fourth place, after saying over the radio to the team that they “shouldn’t lose too much time fighting”.
Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg benefited from the fight between the Red Bulls on the first lap to move into second for the first few laps of the race and then drove well after switching to intermediates at two-thirds distance and charged back up to finish sixth.
Esteban Ocon held on with his fading intermediate tyres on the Alpine ahead of a George Russell, who had switched to slicks on his Mercedes a lap before Hulkenberg and flew back up from the back of the field to take the final point in eighth.
Hulkenberg impressed throughout the race, initially building a lead over Perez when the track was at its wettest before the Red Bull came back at him.
The Haas’ high tyre wear eventually began to have its effect and Hulkenberg fell back, losing places to Perez and Sainz in quick succession, and not long afterwards also to the Aston Martins.
But after Russell had switched to slicks, Hulkenberg followed him in a lap later and set about recovering positions, climbing back up from 10th after his stop to a strong sixth-place finish.
Lando Norris chose to stay on intermediates and finished ninth in the McLaren, after losing ground on the first lap when he became tangled up in the Red Bull battle at Turn Three.
Lewis Hamilton switched to slicks, but could fight back up only to 10th place.

TechnologyThe South Korean-made robot made its debut as a conductor in Seoul at a concert, during which it conducted more than 60 musicians in front of an audience.
The robot, named EveR 6, with a height of 1.80 meters, conducted the musicians of the South Korean National Orchestra. He was the conductor for half an hour, but still with the help of a real conductor.
The robot then bowed to the audience. About 950 spectators greeted him with a standing ovation.
During his performance, the robot fixed its blue eyes on the musicians, looking away and nodding to the beat of the music.
“I came here and wondered if the robot could be pulled without making a mistake. I found it to be in perfect harmony with the musicians. It was a whole new world for me,” one spectator told AFP.
EveR 6 is a product of the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology. It is programmed to perform the movements of a real tracker.
However, the robot is unable to listen or improvise in real time in case a musician makes a mistake.

Culture LifeStyleWhether we admit it or not, we’ve all thought about ghosts at some point. But what makes us feel in the presence of spirits?
Sleep paralysis – Although doctors don’t yet know exactly how this phenomenon occurs, it’s thought to be part of REM sleep, during which you can have dreams that seem real. They suffer from sleep paralysis, feel as if someone is pressing down on them or have hallucinations. Sometimes he feels as if someone has entered his room, sometimes as if something is hovering over his bed.
Mold – It may seem strange, but scientists have linked air quality to ghost sightings. As it turns out, toxic mold spores can cause mood swings, irrational anger, and even brain damage if you’re exposed for too long.
Exploding Head Syndrome – This may sound like a made-up condition, but it’s actually a very real and scary sensory disorder. According to Goldsmiths University, it is characterized by “the perception of a loud noise or the sensation of an explosion in the head, usually when transitioning from deep sleep to wakefulness. Two years ago, a study found that 44.4 percent of people experienced significant fear during these episodes, with a small proportion believing it was caused by something supernatural.
Carbon Monoxide – Links between carbon monoxide and paranormal experiences have been considered since before World War II. In 1921, the American Journal of Ophthalmology recounted the chilling experience of a woman known only as “Ms. H.” After moving into a new house, she and her family started hearing strange voices and even felt like they had other people in their beds. This was accompanied by feeling weak and suffering from a headache, which actually turned out to be the result of carbon monoxide poisoning. This toxic gas (CO) is a tasteless and odorless menace that, even at low concentrations, can cause harm to humans who inhale it. It often comes from burning fuels like gas and propane, as well as wood-burning fireplaces and blocked chimneys.
Pareidolia – If you’ve thought you saw something scary in the bushes, chances are you’ve experienced what’s called pareidolia. This is the same phenomenon that happens when you see people’s faces through the clouds.

TechnologyApple will permanently delete an album of photos from your iPhone next month. However, there is a way not to lose them forever.
The tech giant has announced that it will “retire” My Photo Stream, an album that automatically saves photos taken in the last 30 days.
As a result, My Photo Stream stopped uploading photos on June 26th, and everything in that folder will be lost when the album is deleted on July 26th.
“My Photo Stream will end on July 26, 2023,” Apple explains on its website.
“As part of this transition, new photos uploaded to My Photo Stream from your device will stop uploading one month in advance, on June 26, 2023.”
If a specific photo you don’t want to lose isn’t in the library of the iPhone, iPad, or Mac you’re using, you should make sure to save it to the device’s library.
Apple users have expressed concern about the disappearance of this album on social networks.
“It seems to me that Apple photo stream is gone. I lost a lot of photos,” wrote one of them.Introduced by Steve Jobs in 2011, My Photo Stream is a free service that automatically uploads over 1,000 photos from the past 30 days.

EntertainmentNetflix customers have been horrified by an Australian horror film starring actress Sarah Snook.
“Run Rabbit Run” began to be shown on June 28, and after two days, the complaints of those who have seen it, which they consider very disturbing, have started.
“I was watching ‘Run Rabbit Run’ and my heart was breaking. I stopped it in half”, writes a Twitter user.
Another adds: “This movie is making me cringe…”.While many others had complaints about the way the movie “Run Rabbit Run” ends. The topic of motherhood has long provided the horror genre with some of its greatest stories. From “Rosemary’s Baby” to “The Babadook,” there is something inherently scary about watching your beloved child be overtaken by evil forces or reckoning with the idea that becoming a parent makes us vulnerable to just about every terrible thing in our world (and beyond). In Daina Reid’s new film “Run Rabbit Run,” fertility doctor Sarah (Sarah Snook) meets these tensions head-on when her precocious seven-year-old daughter Mia (Lily LaTorre) begins to claim she’s actually Alice, Sarah’s sister who disappeared when she was Mia’s age.
Reid’s ghost story uses innocuous objects to emphasize the film’s sense of unease. First, Mia shows up with a white fluffy rabbit and quickly becomes obsessed with it, to the point where she begins wearing a self-made pink rabbit mask. The bunny, which she names Rabbit, ominously hops around the house, a harbinger of the bad things still to come. When Sarah tries to get rid of Rabbit, it bites her, the first of many injuries she will incur as she spirals over memories of her missing sister, her estranged mother, and her recently departed father. The film’s conflict is centered between mother Sarah, and daughter Mia, but it also includes a thorny relationship with Sarah’s mother, Joan (Greta Scacchi), creating a cycle of guilt from childhood sins and feeling like she’s not doing enough for her kid.
Rabbit is not the only troubling thing in Hannah Kent’s script. In setting up Sarah’s narrative, Kent shows the audience how much Sarah’s been pushed to the brink even before anything unexplained begins. She’s divorced and co-parenting with her ex-husband, Pete (Damon Herriman), who has moved on and is starting a new family of his own. Sarah is also dealing with the death of her dad, his things are still piled up in her garage, still to be sorted through. And then there’s her mother, an ominous figure also losing her memories to dementia. When Mia’s problems escalate, she first tries to be the strong parent doing what’s right for her child, but then, she starts to hurt herself in the process and by extension, hurts Mia.
In a marvelous departure from her best-known role as Shiv Roy in “Succession,” Snook brings her character a motherly sense of care and duty. She’s attentive and affectionate in ways many of us haven’t seen her. Her calm, collected demeanor quickly erodes in the face of uncertainty and stress. Snook’s attention and care for LaTorre’s Mia are deeply felt, and their bond is evident from the first scene when the mother wakes up her daughter with a birthday gift. LaTorre looks at Snook with large expressive eyes that shift from confused and scared when she’s inexplicably bleeding to burning with rage when she screams that she’s actually Alice. But in moments of Mia’s clarity, LaTorre runs to Snook and embraces her tightly for safety, establishing the close relationship between the pair early on, giving us a sense of what will be lost once Rabbit enters the frame.
Sarah’s descent into madness mirrors the haunting landscape of the film’s setting in Waikerie, Australia. There ate windswept horizons, imposing cliffs, stormy clouds over luscious green hills, flutters of birds flying in droves by her old home, and what looks like trees sprouting out of a purple river. The film wallows in a weatherbeaten palette, with lots of pale yellows and dusty grays in the daytime. At night, darkness takes over, and even well-lit homes and cozy bedrooms start to feel unsafe. Cinematographer Bonnie Elliot carefully plays with these moods to create a visual sense of Sarah’s spiral. The film’s aesthetic becomes increasingly erratic as she loses her grip on reality. When Sarah goes in and out of a dreamlike state, images may look hazy or disorienting in their closeup, then harshly come into focus when she returns to reality. When Sarah starts to lose control, Snook physically takes her character to that dark place, but the film’s camera immerses the viewer in her unease.
Motherhood, like extreme moments of grief, can be among the most life-changing experiences—a clear demarcation of life before and after the event. Sometimes, it can also be coupled with extreme feelings of isolation, which in this horror movie, makes a person vulnerable to the ghosts of their past. “Run Rabbit Run” is a solid, spooky tale without anything too flashy like a Babadook to haunt our dreams and memes but chilling enough to make us sit up in our chairs and scan the screen for the next sign of danger. While a fluffy white rabbit may symbolize innocence, it leads Sarah down a nightmarish version of “Alice in Wonderland.” The mothers in this film are haunted by the mistakes they made. Joan never seemed to have recovered from Alice’s disappearance, and Sarah’s barely buried trauma resurfaces her own feelings of regret over failing her daughter. And once Sarah is through the looking glass, are she and Mia safe? Are any of us?

USAA man indicted for his alleged role in the Jan. 6 riots was arrested Thursday at gunpoint in his van near former President Barack Obama’s residence, according to a law enforcement official.
Taylor Taranto, 37, was arrested on a warrant, authorities said. D.C. police said he has been charged as a fugitive from justice, though they did not specify the underlying details of the case.
The official who described the weapons found did so on condition of anonymity because the investigation remains ongoing, including Taranto’s motives.
The arrest occurred around 2 p.m. in the 2400 block of Kalorama Road NW, when Secret Service officers located Taranto and detained him, according to D.C. police deputy director of communications. Paris Lewbel.
D.C. police then sent a specialized unit to conduct a sweep of Taranto’s van, which was found near the scene of his arrest.
The police department said in a statement that “there is no active threat to the community and this incident remains under investigation.” It was unclear whether the Obama family was home at the time.
The lawsuit against Taranto and another man was filed in 2021 by Erin Smith, the wife of D.C. police officer Jeffrey Smith, whose suicide nine days after the riots was declared a death in the line of duty.
In the civil suit, attorneys for the Smith family said Taranto gave the other man, David Walls-Kaufman, leverage. Walls-Kaufman then used the gun to hit Smith in the face, according to court documents.
Taranto, who is representing himself in court, has categorically denied the allegations in court documents. Walls-Kaufman was also charged criminally with trespassing and disorderly conduct, and was sentenced to two months in jail.
Police said Thursday that the 37-year-old man had no fixed address. Taranto said in court filings that he was a resident of Washington state.

PoliticsCambodia’s leader Hun Sen has quit Facebook and threatened to block it in his country after the platform’s oversight board recommended he be suspended for six months.
Hun Sen had called for violence against his political opponents in a video in January which was viewed 600,000 times.
His move comes days before he launches a re-election campaign to extend his 38-year-long rule.
Hun Sen was a prolific Facebook user and his page had 14 million followers.
After he left the platform on Thursday, he also threatened to block Facebook in the country.
Talking to garment workers in Pursat province on Friday, he warned he could at any time block the platform “for a short period or forever” to prevent exiled opposition politicians from talking to the country’s citizens.
“Don’t be arrogant, you guys are staying overseas, you are using Facebook for communications, we could block Facebook,” he threatened in comments aimed at opponents.
Hun Sen urged Cambodians to migrate to other social media platforms, including Telegram and TikTok, which he has moved to.
Before he quit Facebook, Hun Sen had built up a following of about 800,000 users on Telegram which is a commonly used channel in Cambodian politics. Critics say the 69-year-old leader’s massive social media reach has been due in part to bots or fake accounts.
Facebook parent Meta’s Oversight Board on Thursday recommended his suspension for six months over an earlier video, posted in January. It overturned an earlier decision by Facebook to keep the video live, citing “newsworthiness”.
“Given the severity of the violation, Hun Sen’s history of committing human rights violations and intimidating political opponents, as well as his strategic use of social media to amplify such threats, the Board calls on Meta to immediately suspend Hun Sen’s Facebook page and Instagram account for six months,” the Board said in a statement.
In the video, Hun Sen threatened opposition leaders against accusing his party of vote theft in elections due to be held in July.
“Either you face legal action in court, or I rally [Cambodian People’s Party] people for a demonstration and beat you up,” he said.
Soon after the Oversight Board’s decision was announced, Hun Sen said he had asked an assistant to delete his Facebook account.
Hun Sen has served as Cambodian Prime Minister for more than 38 years, and is one of the longest-serving political leaders in the world. His rule has been dogged with allegations of human rights abuses, and he has also been accused of decimating all political opposition ahead of the July vote.
In May, Cambodia’s electoral body disqualified his sole credible challenger, the Candlelight Party, citing a lack of appropriate paperwork.
And earlier in March, opposition leader Kem Sokha was sentenced to 27 years house arrest for treason, a charge that he denies.
Hun Sen’s exit from Facebook is his way of pre-empting the Meta board’s suspension, says Sebastian Strangio, author of the book “Hun Sen’s Cambodia”.
Mr Strangio told the AFP news agency that Hun Sen’s decision to move to TikTok and Telegram also reflects Cambodia’s broader foreign policy pivot to China and Russia.
TikTok’s parent, ByteDance, is based in Beijing while Telegram was founded in Russia, where it is widely used by the public and even the Kremlin.
“Based on their track record, it is much less likely that these two platforms will restrict Hun Sen from using them as he sees fit, including as a vehicle for baiting, goading, and threatening his opponents,” Mr Strangio said.
Human Rights Watch (HRW) described Hun Sen’s departure from the world’s largest social media platform as an overdue “face-off between Big Tech and a dictator over human rights issues”.
“The stakes are high because plenty of real world harm is caused when an authoritarian uses social media to incite violence — as we have already seen far too many times in Cambodia,” said HRW Deputy Asia Director Phil Robertson.
Hun Sen’s threat to block Facebook has already sparked reaction in Cambodia, where the social media site is seen as the main platform for online activity ranging from political discussions to e-commerce.
“If Facebook is blocked, ties with the West will worsen. Bad officials will be happy,” one Facebook user wrote.
