SportsThe Paris Olympics have produced a host of controversies in various disciplines. Women’s boxing is not left behind either.
In recent days, there has been a lot of talk about the participation of Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting in Paris, becoming the object of criticism on social networks.
Both female boxers were disqualified from the 2023 World Cup due to having XY chromosomes (as men have), when women must have two X chromosomes.
Imane Khelif had received criticism from Italy (including rivals Carini) before the match, as they considered her to be “trans”, and saw the decision she could make as unfair.
After her match against Angela Carini, the criticism will surely not stop, as after 46 seconds the Italian said enough and gave up and then burst into tears.
“Mi ha fatto malissimo”, which means “It hurt me a lot”, was written on the lips of the Italian woman.
She also repeatedly said “it’s not fair” during the decision and refused to salute her Algerian “rival” at the end.
The duel started with a brutal right hand kick from the Algerian, which already caused a problem with Carini’s defensive jaw.
A few seconds after this episode, she raised her hand and ended her participation in the Olympics, showing all her disappointment.

Sports TrendingVenezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has strangely declared war on Elon Musk and challenged him to a wrestling match after claiming the Tesla and SpaceX CEO is behind widespread speculation that this weekend’s election was rigged.
In a lengthy speech aired on state television yesterday, Maduro attacked the tech mogul, claiming his social media platform X was fabricating allegations that the election was stolen and labeling him a “big enemy” of Venezuela and a “representation of fascism” and the “extreme right”.
“Social media creates a virtual reality and who controls the virtual reality? Our new enemy, the famous Elon Musk”, declared Maduro, 61 years old. “He would like to invade Venezuela with his missiles and his armies.”
‘Do you want to meet? Let’s do it. Elon Musk, I’m ready. I’m not afraid of you, Elon Musk. Let’s fight wherever you want,” Maduro concluded.
Musk, 53, responded hours later via his X social network.
In a post featuring the article in which Maduro challenged Musk to a “match,” the latter responded by simply writing, “I agree.”
Continuing with the posts on X, Musk said that if he wins against Maduro, the latter must resign from being the “dictator” of Venezuela. In the opposite case, he said that he would provide Maduro with a free flight to the planet Mars.
Musk has published a series of posts on X claiming that the opposition candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez, won the election with an overwhelming majority.
He also shared a post from opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, along with a poster of Maduro wanted by the US State Department on narco-terrorism charges.

TechnologyMicrosoft’s cloud service has been hit by yet another outage, weeks after an IT failure at the company’s services “stopped the world”.
In a post on X, Cambridge Water said some of its services were down this afternoon.
“Due to worldwide issues with Microsoft Azure, an issue with our website is affecting several services, including MyAccount and PayNow,” the water company said.
Microsoft said it is investigating reports of user problems, saying: “We are investigating reports of problems related to Microsoft services globally.
The company later announced that it had implemented a fix that appeared to resolve the issue, saying there was “improvement in service availability” and that it was “continuing to monitor to ensure full recovery.”
However, the service status website still showed global problems. Thousands of problems were reported by users on DownDetector, a website that monitors problems with IT services.
The incident comes less than two weeks after a major IT outage hit global infrastructure, including transportation and offline healthcare services, because a botched software update by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike affected Microsoft devices.
With thousands of flights canceled globally, US airline Delta is reportedly planning to seek compensation from both Crowdstrike and Microsoft.

Technology USAThe Justice Department accused TikTok on Friday of collecting information about US users about their views on issues such as gun control, abortion and religion.
Government legal representatives wrote in documents filed with the Court of Appeals in Washington that TikTok and its Beijing-based parent company, ByteDance, used an internal system called Lark to enable TikTok employees to speak directly with ByteDance’s engineers in China.
According to federal officials, employees of the Tik-Tok network used the Lark system to send sensitive data about American users, information that is being stored on Chinese servers and to which employees of the company ByteDance in China have access.
Last year, the Wall Street Journal reported that Tik-Tok had been tracking users who had viewed content related to the LGBTQ community.
The documents filed in court today mark the first major government action in the legal battle over the future of the social media platform used by more than 170 million Americans.
Under a law signed by President Joe Biden in April, the company could face a ban within months if it does not cut ties with ByteDance.

TechnologyIf you’re one of the two billion WhatsApp users, you’ll soon be able to talk to other people in different languages.
That’s because WhatsApp, perhaps the most popular messaging app in the world, could soon get a lot smarter and allow users to use the Live Translate feature.
In short, Live Translate is what you think it is: the feature “listens” to what the speaker is saying and almost instantly translates it into a language you can understand.
The goal is for you, let’s say, an English speaker, to be able to communicate with your friend from Korea without either of you knowing any language other than your native language, writes foreign media, Telegraph reports.

Normally, you may face challenges in understanding and responding to each other.
This is where Live Translate comes in. Using advanced AI technology, it can translate spoken or written language almost instantly.
It is reported that Samsung’s Live Translate feature supports a total of 16 languages.
In April, the three new additions were: Arabic, Indonesian, and Russian.
They join Chinese, English, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Thai and Vietnamese.

Politics Technology USAAllowing TikTok to continue to be operated by its current parent company could allow the Chinese government to covertly influence US elections, the Justice Department said in a court filing late Friday.
Prosecutors raised concerns that TikTok’s algorithm could be used in a “covert manipulation” campaign to “influence the views of Americans for its own purposes.”
“Among other things, it would allow a foreign government to unlawfully interfere in our political system and political discourse, including our elections,” prosecutors wrote.
The document added, “if, for example, the Chinese government were to determine that the outcome of a particular US election is sufficiently important to Chinese interests.”
“Allowing the Chinese government to stand ready to use TikTok to maximum effectiveness at a moment of extreme importance poses an unacceptable threat to national security,” prosecutors wrote.
The statement is in response to a federal lawsuit TikTok filed against the US government in May in an attempt to block a law that could force a nationwide ban on the app.
That law, which President Joe Biden signed into law in April, says TikTok must find a new owner by mid-January 2025 or be banned outright from the United States.
Friday’s filing marks the first time the federal government has responded to the lawsuit.
The legal battle could determine whether US security concerns about TikTok’s ties to China can override the First Amendment rights of TikTok’s 170 million US users.
In their lawsuit, TikTok and Bytedance say the US law is unconstitutional because it violates free speech rights and prevents Americans from accessing legitimate information.

Sports TravelA few hours before the start of the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris, the French capital is facing an unusual and chaotic situation.
The BBC reports that high-speed rail has been damaged in several regions and has caused passenger congestion at Gare Montparnasse station in Paris. A large number of trains have been cancelled, while railway authorities have warned that the situation could last well into the weekend until repairs are carried out.
The French railway company SNCF has announced that three lines have been interrupted, while it is noted that unidentified persons are trying to paralyze the railway network, setting fires to damage the network.
In a recent reaction, the SNCF president said that at least 800,000 passengers were affected by the chaos in the railway system.
Eurostar has announced the cancellation of 25% of all scheduled services until Sunday, following the chaos caused by sabotage on French railways. The rail company, which operates international services from London’s St Pancras, has confirmed that 25% of its trains will no longer run on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Some services to Paris have already been cancelled, others have been diverted or delayed due to ongoing problems and customers are being asked to cancel their journeys where possible.
“Eurostar expects this situation to last until Monday morning,” the company said in a statement.

TechnologyThe risk of collapse for generative artificial intelligence remains ever-present. The very contents they generate can “suffocate” them. The materials they contain are able to seriously “contaminate” the database used to train them.
The study led by Ilia Shumailov, of the University of Oxford and published in the journal “Nature”, raises the problem of a dangerous spiral effect, where AI teaches us new information using the content it produces itself in a vicious circle.
“It is a study that verifies in fact, in a very precise way, the old concerns, that is, that have existed since the birth of generative models”, emphasizes Viviana Patti, computer science expert at the University of Turin.
Generative AI is now more and more widespread, starting with ChatGpt, a dozen other very popular models have arrived quickly, capable of producing all kinds of content in just a few moments, from texts to photos and videos with the internet that is rapidly being populated with content created precisely by algorithms.
Until a few years ago, the Internet could be considered a “cauldron” of content of all kinds, reliable and otherwise, but all characterized by a common element: they were produced by human beings.
Now this is no longer the case and may be less and less, causing a change that can lead to a significant problem.
In fact, AIs learn based on the materials, texts or photos, that are made available to them and on which they are trained, and until now these were generally human-produced content, for example Wikipedia pages or groups animal photos, but now that the internet is being populated with AI-generated content, it could change the quality of what AI itself learns.

SportsIn the first football match of the Olympics, between Argentina and Morocco, something that had never been seen before happened.
Argentina equalized 2-2 in the 106th minute, which resulted in hard objects being thrown and the pitch being invaded by many Moroccan fans. The referee sent the teams to the dressing rooms and it was thought that the challenge had ended in a draw. But then the organizers announced that in fact the challenge had been suspended due to the fireworks thrown by the fans and that the stadium had to be emptied before the match could continue.
Meanwhile, Argentina’s goal was being reviewed by VAR.
The stadium was emptied and after two hours, the teams returned to the playing field. There, the referee made the VAR sign and went to see the footage on the monitor, disallowing Argentina’s goal when 2 hours had passed since the teams had left the field.
The match restarted and 3 minutes were played, and then the referee signaled its end, decreeing a 2-1 victory for Morocco.

SportsESPN has ranked the 20 best players of the 21st century, placing Lionel Messi above Cristiano Ronaldo. However, the biggest surprise comes from the player who is ranked third on this list.
Shortly after releasing the top 100 athletes of the 21st century, ESPN has now released the list of the top 20 players since 2000, based on thousands of votes.
The Argentine star is once again ranked higher than the Portuguese striker, but the biggest surprise comes in third place, as neither Neymar nor Mbappe made it to the podium.
Instead, ESPN has chosen Thierry Henry as the third best player of the century behind Messi and Ronaldo. The Frenchman was successful both at the club level and with the national team, leaving big marks at Arsenal, while at the same time he was key at the Roosters.
The article explains how Henry has ‘revolutionised the role of the number 9 in football’, something which may explain why he took the place of some other big names.
ESPN explains why neither Neymar nor Mbappe managed to finish on the podium with Messi and Ronaldo.
Although he still has to prove himself, Mbappe is being seen as the new face of European football after the Messi-Ronaldo era. Now that he has joined Real Madrid, all eyes are on the French star, who helped his country win the World Cup at the age of 19.”
Surprisingly, Neymar did not make this ESPN ranking, coming in at 20th on the list.
“The prince never grew up to be the king of the game. The player of the year award was always seen as a target, but he fell short and never won a major trophy with his country,” ESPN explained.
