SportsOne of the most naturally talented and exciting young and unbeaten fighters around, Vergil Ortiz will finally make his return to the ring in January, when he will move up from 147 to 154 pounds. RingTV.com reports that Ortiz, 19-0(19) and, before his enforced layoff of almost 18-months one of the best welterweights out there, will face Fredrick Lawson in Las Vegas on January 6th. Health problems plagued the 25 year old, with Ortiz suffering from a condition called rhabdomyolysis, and with Ortiz reportedly fainting in his dressing room prior to his ill-fated fight with Eimantas Stanionis (this a match up that was scheduled to happen no less than three times, only for it to fall apart, once due to Stanionis undergoing surgery for an appendectomy).
But now, promoter Oscar De La Hoya says Ortiz of Texas is ready to “come back stronger than ever to become a world champion.” “He’s got the heart and dedication, ans is on a mission to be a world title holder,” De La Hoya told Ring. “I know he will make a statement in this new division against the powerful warrior from Ghana in Fredrick Lawson. Golden Buy will be starting 2024 with a bang, and we’re proud to have Vergil launch our action-packed boxing schedule for the year.”
While fans may be disappointed to see Ortiz leave the 147 pound division (for the time being at least, perhaps for good, we will have to wait and see), he will no doubt make an exciting addition to the 154 pound weight division – imagine, for one exciting potential fight, Ortiz against Tim Tszyu. Against Lawson, 30-2(22), Ortiz will face a pretty tough guy who has good experience. 34 year old Lawson is also coming off two good wins. Lawson has been a pro since 2011 and he knows his way around a ring. Ortiz, who last fought in August of 2022, when he stopped Michael McKinson in the ninth round, will almost certainly be rusty in his ring return, and this could prove somewhat dangerous against the man from Accra who now lives in Chicago.
That said, if he has put all his medical issues firmly behind him and if Ortiz is now 100 percent fit and ready to fight, he should do away with Lawson, most likely inside the distance (Lawson has been stopped in each of his three defeats). Most of all, it will be great to see Ortiz back in the ring. Against Maurice Hooker and Egidijus Kavaliauskas, Ortiz impressed us all and he was closing in on a world title shot. Can Ortiz make up for lost time in a big way next year?

Films like The Witch, Hereditary and Midsommar are proof that production company A24 is rarely wrong when it comes to horror films, and a large number of viewers of last year’s horror film Men, directed by Alex Garland for A24, would agree with this.
Alex Garland is best known for the acclaimed sci-fi film Ex Machina, for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
Garland also wrote the screenplay for Men, but this time it was met with criticism, as some critics were unhappy with the narrative structure of his horror.
The Man follows widow Harper, played by Jessie Buckley, who goes on vacation to a nearby village after her husband commits suicide. Although the vacation was supposed to be an opportunity to heal, her life turns into a nightmare because she is constantly surrounded by men from the village who bear the same face. All the men were played by Rory Kinnear.
Men viewers took to Xu (Twitter) to report that the film was so disturbing that some audience members left the theater during the screening.
Garland’s film Men received a 69% from Rotten Tomatoes critics, while IMDb viewers gave it a 6.1 out of 10.

Messi won his record-extending Ballon d’Or award ahead of Manchester City forward Erling Haaland.
France forward Kylian Mbappe – who became just the second man to score a World Cup final hat-trick in the 4-2 penalty shootout loss to Argentina – finished third.
“It’s nice to be here once more to enjoy this moment,” Messi said. “To be able to win the World Cup and achieve my dream.”
The former Barcelona and Paris St-Germain star added: “I couldn’t imagine having the career I’ve had and everything I’ve achieved, the fortune I’ve had to be part of the best team in history.
Norway international Haaland scored a record-breaking 36 goals in 35 league games and hit 52 in all competitions as City won the Treble of Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup.
He was recognised for his achievements with the Gerd Muller Trophy for best goalscorer.
“I want to thank Manchester City, the whole club,” said Haaland.
“I also want to thank my family and all the people around me for making me who I am today.”
The Ballon d’Or recognises the best footballer of the year and is voted for by 100 journalists from around the world.
As well as helping Argentina to World Cup glory, Messi also played a key role as Inter Miami won their first trophy – the Leagues Cup – and has scored 11 goals in 14 appearances for the Major League Soccer side.
He has now won three more Ballon d’Or awards than anyone else, with Cristiano Ronaldo having won it five times, most recently in 2017.
The Portugal international, who plays for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, was not named on the shortlist for the first time since 2003.
Argentina World Cup winner and Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez won the Yashin Trophy for the best goalkeeper in the world.
Martinez won the Golden Glove in Qatar, saving a spot-kick from Kingsley Coman in the penalty shootout win against France in the final.

However, Martinez was jeered by some of the crowd at the Paris ceremony. The goalkeeper was criticised for this celebration after winning the World Cup against France last year.

Pep Guardiola’s side became only the second English team to win the Treble of Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup last season.
They had seven players shortlisted for the men’s Ballon d’Or award.
Real Madrid winger Vinicius Jr received the Socrates Award for his contribution off the field and vowed to keep speaking out against racism in world football.
Vinicius has been the target of racist abuse regularly in La Liga games for the past two seasons.
He was recognised for starting a foundation that is building schools in impoverished areas and investing in education in Brazil.
“I will remain strong in the fight against racism,” said the Brazilian. “It is a very sad thing to talk about racism nowadays, but we have to continue in the fight so that people suffer less.”
Former England and Manchester United midfielder David Beckham presented the men’s Ballon d’Or to Messi, but before announcing the winner he paid tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton.
The England World Cup winner died at the age of 86 earlier this month.
“I probably don’t have to tell this room how special Sir Bobby was to the world of football,” Beckham said.
“He was respected on the field for what he won but was respected even more off the field for what he stood for.
“He will be missed. When we looked up into the stands he would always be there cheering us on.
“He started it off for me. If it was not for Sir Bobby turning around to Manchester United and saying ‘watch this young man’ I probably would not have played for Manchester United.
“I owe him everything.”
