UK police are investigating a history-making case of rape that took place in a virtual reality game where a teenage girl was “sexually assaulted” by a group of strangers in the online “Metaverse”.
The victim, who was wearing headphones, was not injured as there was no actual physical attack.
Further details about the case have been kept confidential to protect the child due to concerns that pursuing legal action over the cyber attack may not be feasible.
While the girl making the accusation was not physically injured, police sources say she may have endured trauma comparable to that of a real-life rape victim.
“There is an emotional and psychological impact on the victim that is more long-lasting than any physical damage,” a senior officer told the Daily Mail.
However, British authorities fear that prosecuting the case under existing laws, which define sexual assault as “physically touching” sexually and without the consent of both parties, may be impossible.
