US authorities said on Thursday they had busted what they considered the world’s largest cybercriminal group, which had managed to embezzle around $6 billion in US-only Covid-19 relief funds.

The Department of Justice arrested a 35-year-old Chinese national, YunHe Wang, and seized several luxury watches, more than 20 real estates and a Ferrari. The network allegedly run by Wang and several others, called “911 S5”, distributed viruses through e-mails during the period 2014-2022. Wang is also believed to have made a further $99 million by licensing the virus to other criminal groups.

This network is accused of benefiting from $5.9 billion in US government funds to ease the consequences of the pandemic. Wang faces up to 65 years in prison if convicted of computer crime and money laundering charges.

The operation extended not only to the United States, but also to Germany, the Netherlands, France, Denmark, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom and was coordinated with Eurojust. Authorities have managed to take control of 2,000 online domains and 100 servers.

According to Europol, the operation called “Endgame” will not stop there. Dutch police said the damage caused by this group to the government and various private companies was hundreds of millions of euros. While the German authorities have issued arrest warrants for 8 people, who have been included in the list of the most wanted in the country.
