An unusual situation is developing almost a month before the start of Euro 2024.
Spain and Italy, opponents of Albania in the European group, risk exclusion from this activity if the respective countries do not give up the decision to control the football federations.
More precisely, the Spanish state has built a monitoring and control commission for the Spanish Football Federation, seeing the situation created after the dismissal of the president Luis Rubiales and the allegations of abuses of Roha, his most likely successor who enjoyed the support of the regional federations.
The state has blocked the elections and for the moment it is the relevant Ministry for sports that controls the Federation, with a commission that should normalize its situation.
FIFA and UEFA are against control by the governments of the Federations, although for example in Arab countries they openly allow such a thing, so they have threatened Spain with exclusion from official activities.
Now, Italy is doing the same, but in a slightly different way.
The government is ready to approve a legal act for the creation of an “Agency for economic and financial vigilance of professional sports associations”.
The latter can control all money coming in and out of sports associations, including the federation.
In theory, this agency should only serve to check whether or not there are financial violations.
But UEFA does not like such a thing, so it has hinted that the approval of such an agency will bring serious consequences for Italy.
Even in this case, the threat of exclusion from the European Union is more likely.
With such threats, it remains to be seen how the countries in question will react, two of the largest in Europe with a political, but also very important sports weight.
Small states, including Albania, have turned back in the past.
But Spain and Italy could set a dangerous precedent for UEFA, stripping it of a strong shield it had created for confederation leaders.
