A video that went viral showing an artificial intelligence robot touching a female journalist’s rear during an interview at a technology festival in Saudi Arabia has sparked backlash on social media. According to the New York Post, journalist Rawia Qassem was speaking in front of the robot named “Mohammad” when he suddenly moved his hand towards her rear.
Qassem, clearly startled, quickly moved away from the robot, even gesturing for it to stop. She then went on to present at DeepFest, an Artificial Intelligence event held earlier this month in Riyadh. Robotics company QSS, which developed Mohammad, told Metro UK that the robot is “fully autonomous” and operates “independently, without direct human control”. In a statement they said that:
We have already thoroughly reviewed the video and the circumstances in which the event took place. There has been no deviation from the expected behavior of “Mohammed”, however, additional measures will be taken to prevent the robot from being approached by any person within its range of motion.
“Mohammed” was created to help carry out tasks in dangerous conditions, helping to improve safety for people, according to Metro UK. This leads some to believe that the robot moved this way to ask Qasem to step forward. QSS said it takes safety seriously, so it asked event attendees not to stand too close to the robot during its outings.
