Authorities said on Saturday that a couple of influencers, Fernanda and Vicente, were brutally attacked by a gang of assailants as they passed through the Dumka district in India on their way to Nepal.
The couple, known for documenting their travels on Instagram with over 190,000 followers, were camping overnight in Dumka when the attack happened, the Daily Beast reported.
Both suffered serious injuries, with visible bruising on their faces. They tearfully recounted the event in Spanish in videos posted on Instagram. “Something happened to us that we wouldn’t wish on anyone,” says Fernanda in the video, “seven men raped me, beat us and robbed us.”
She added that the attackers did not steal many things “because what they wanted was to rape her”. In another post, Vicente showed viewers his injuries around his mouth. “My mouth is destroyed, but Fernanda is worse than me,” he said, adding that the attackers had hit him repeatedly with a helmet and a stone on his head. Police said Fernanda arrived in a patrol van around 11 p.m. and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Pitamber Singh Kherwar, the district superintendent of police, said they had arrested three people in connection with the attack and were searching for others.
The case once again brought to light the horrific history of sexual assault in India. According to the National Crime Records Bureau, the nation is among the worst for sexual violence against women; in 2022, about 90 rapes were reported every day. However, victim shaming and a lack of confidence in the effectiveness of law enforcement often result in under-reporting of rape.
