A researcher backed by tech millionaire Elon Musk in his research has once again sounded the alarm about the threat of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to humanity, saying there is no evidence that it can be controlled by humans. .
Dr. Roman V. Yampolskiy, an AI security expert has received research funding from Musk for advanced intelligent systems, which he explains in his book AI: Unexplainable, Unpredictable , Uncontrollable.’)
The book examines technology’s potential to completely change the society we live in, and not for the better, as well as its potential to cause catastrophe.
Yampsolskiy, professor of computer science at the University of Louisville, after his examinations came to the conclusion that there is no evidence that AI can be stopped from actions that are harmful to humans.
He suggests that in order to maintain control over it, there is a need for modifications with “cancel” or “rollback” options which should be comprehensible and transparent, in human language.
“I can say that this is one of the most important problems that humanity has faced,” Yampsolskiy said in his statement.
The head of technology company OpenAI, Sam Altman, said this week that questions and concerns about AI are important but not “those about robots rebelling against humans”.
“There are some things that can go wrong, but I’m not interested in killer robots running out into the streets when something goes wrong,” he said at yesterday’s tech summit in Dubai.
Musk is reported to have financed Yampsolskiy in the past, but the amounts and details have not been disclosed, writes the Daily Mail network.
The head of Tesla himself has sounded the alarm about AI from 2023 after an open letter of thousands of experts from the Future of Life Institute.
The letter said that AI labs around the world are racing to create powerful artificial human minds that no one, not even their creators, can reliably understand, predict or control.
Yampolskiy’s book also raises such concerns.
Experts predict that technology will reach its independence in 2045, surpassing human intelligence with the ability to reproduce itself, when it can no longer be controlled.
Yampolskiy said the technology’s abilities to learn, adapt and act independently make it uncontrollable by humans.
“If we get used to accepting without explanation the answers and solutions offered by Artificial Intelligence we will not know if we are getting wrong or manipulative solutions. Humanity must either be protected or respected, but not both,” said Yampolskiy, among others.
