The head of the FBI has announced that the federal bureau of investigation has cracked down on a group of Chinese hackers who were trying to damage important US sites.
The US has managed to block hacking efforts by a Chinese-sponsored group aimed at damaging key public infrastructure such as the power grid and pipelines.
This is what FBI Director Christopher Wray has claimed, who pointed out that the “Volt Typhoon” group hacked hundreds of office databases to access data on assets of the United States of America.
The hackers were preparing to “wreak havoc and cause significant real-world harm to American citizens and communities.”
Wray told a US congressional committee that China is preparing in the event of a hostile conflict.
“When China decides it’s time to strike, it’s not just focused on political or military objectives.”
The Chinese government has yet to respond to the allegations.
However, it has previously denied allegations of any state-sponsored cyberwarfare against other countries.
At Wednesday’s hearing of the Select Committee on US-China Competition, the issue was described as looming and high-stakes.
The committee has been criticized by Beijing, which has called on the committee to “remove ideological bias and Cold War mentality to zero”.
Cyber security experts in the US have previously warned that China is targeting infrastructure in order to establish potential bases for disrupting communications in the event of a conflict.
But Mr. Wray described Beijing’s resources dedicated to cyber warfare in detail and said China’s hacking program was larger than that of all other major nations combined.
He also said that FBI cyber agents outnumbered their Chinese counterparts by 50 to 1.
