The story of the Cecil Hotel, now officially called the Stay on Main, is located on Main Street in Los Angeles, and has a very chilling story that has fueled the imagination of many for years.
Unlike other haunted hotels where ghosts are “seen” and where accidents may have occurred, Cecil has been the scene of several fatal accidents that can be characterized as mysterious.
The Cecil is a hotel built in 1924 and designed as an affordable place for business people and travelers to stay.
This 14-story building has 700 rooms and as of 2017, the building is under the protection of the city and has been declared a cultural asset of Los Angeles.
However, during its more than 90 years of existence, Hotel Cecil has gained a reputation as a place of horror, where unexplained and supernatural things happen.
Two serial killers, Richard Ramirez and Jack Unterweger, once stayed at the hotel. Ramirez, also known as the Night Stalker, killed up to 13 people in the 1980s before he was caught.
Unterweger is believed to have killed at least three prostitutes during his stay at the hotel. It is an urban myth that Elizabeth Short, whose 1947 murder was never solved, was seen drinking in the hotel bar just days before her death.
It is a crime that shocked all of America that year, as her body was cut in half and mutilated. Her killer was never found and today it is the oldest unsolved crime in the history of the “city of angels”.
Her case has been the subject of books, TV shows and Hollywood movies, including 1981’s True Story starring Robert De Niro and Robert Duvall.
The press of the time called her “The Black Dahlia” and in 2006 Brian de Palma made a film about her with that name. The story of student Eliza Lam is still the one that attracted the most attention as her death remains a mystery to this day.The body of Canadian student Eliza Lam was found in a water tank at the hotel in 2013, and how it got there was never explained.
