From the once impenetrable skies of Russia, Ukrainian drones continue to fall. One crashed into a building in central Moscow on Friday after being shot down by Russia’s air defenses, causing traffic problems at all of the capital’s civilian airports.
A witness quoted by the Reuters news agency described a powerful explosion, while images from the scene showed emergency response teams inspecting the terrace of a non-residential building hit by the drone.
“At around 4:00 a.m., the Kiev regime launched another terrorist attack using an unmanned aerial vehicle against objects located in Moscow and the Moscow region,” the Russian Defense Ministry said.
Mayor Sergei Sobianin announced that there were no casualties and that the air defense had destroyed the drone that fell on a building of the Expo Center complex.
The complex includes large exhibition sections and multi-functional facilities, and is located less than 5 km from the Kremlin.
Air traffic was temporarily suspended at the 4 largest airports around the capital – Vnukovo, Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo and Zhukovsky – which were later reopened.
Drone attacks inside Russia have increased significantly since one such aircraft was shot down over the Kremlin in early May. Civilian areas in the capital were hit later that month, while a business district in Moscow was targeted twice in three days during August.
