Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has launched Threads. It is the most dangerous competitor for the platform owned by Elon Musk, Twitter. “Let’s do it. Welcome to Threads,” wrote Meta CEO and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in the first post on the new platform.
The number of users reached five million in the first four hours. “We just passed 5 million registrations in the first four hours,” the head of Meta wrote on his official Threads account. The app is available in more than 100 countries, including the US, Canada, Australia, Britain and Japan.
But initially the new app will not be downloaded in Europe due to the restrictive data usage policy. Posts are limited to 500 characters, which is more than Twitter’s 280 character threshold, and can include links, photos and videos up to 5 minutes long.
Meta called the new app an “initial version”. Although Threads is a standalone app, users sign in using an Instagram account. The Instagram username continues, but there is an option to customize their profile specifically for Threads.
