Australia’s internet safety watchdog has given Twitter 28 days to clean up “toxicity and hate” on its platform, threatening to fine the company if it doesn’t comply.
Twitter has become Australia’s most problematic platform since Elon Musk, one of the world’s richest men, bought it last year for $44 billion and promised to protect free speech on the platform.
The company has been told to respond to the watchdog within 28 days or face fines of up to A$700,000 a day for continued breaches. The request builds on a campaign by the regulator to make the social media company more accountable.
