Czech cyber watchdogs have issued a warning about the use of social network TikTok, joining other Western authorities in labeling the Chinese-owned app a security threat.
Many countries have expressed concern that TikTok could provide Chinese authorities with access to users’ personal data.
“The agency is concerned about a potential security threat posed by the use of TikTok, primarily due to the amount of user data collected by the app and the manner in which the data is handled,” the National Cyber and Security Agency said. of Information Security in the Czech Republic (NUKIB).
ByteDance, TikTok’s related company, “lies under the legal jurisdiction of the People’s Republic of China,” NUKIB continued, adding that this is concerning.
A bill to outlaw software that US Government employees are not allowed to download to their devices has been introduced by US lawmakers. Radio Free Europe writes that the Czech government, even though it is part of the EU, has not imposed any ban so far.
China was named a significant threat to Czech cyberspace by the country’s National Intelligence Agency (BIS) in a report published last year.
“Chinese technologies infiltrating critical internet networks of state infrastructures … can be assessed as a major security threat,” the report said.
